Cake, Pakistan’s official entry for the Oscars 2019 has fallen out of the race after the first phase of voting.
The Asim Abbasi directed film was initially in the running to qualify for the best foreign language film category at the 91st Academy Awards.
The Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences announced that only nine films have advanced to the next round of voting and revealed their names … Cake was not one of them.
The films shortlisted are Birds of Passage (Colombia), The Guilty (Denmark), Never Look Away (Germany), Shoplifters (Japan), Ayka (Kazakhstan), Capernaum (Lebanon), Roma (Mexico), Cold War (Poland) and Burning (South Korea).
Sanam Saeed and Aamina Sheikh starrer ‘Cake’ is the story of two sisters who met after a long time in the metropolitan city of Karachi. It has won a number of international awards including the Best Feature Film Award at the South Asian Film Festival in Montreal (SAFFM 2018) last month. The movie has already made us proud at the international levels and the credit also goes to the entire cast and the leads Sanam Saeed, Aamina Sheikh, Mohammed Ahmed, Mikaal Zulfiqar and Adnan Malik for delivering stellar performances.
