Indian streaming website ZEE5 has removed Pakistani drama web-series Churails from the streaming-platform for Pakistani audience only. The series starring Sarwat Gilani, Mehar Bano, Nimra Bucha and Yasra Rizvi in lead roles revolved around Karachi’s secret detectives whose mission was to expose the city’s unfaithful, elite and cheater husbands.

Asim Abbasi, the director of Churails, confirmed in a series of tweets that the airing of his web series have been deleted in Pakistan on Z5. Asim Abbasi said that surprisingly the web series which is being praised all over the world is not being shown in his own country.

How strange for #Churails to be lauded internationally, and now be shut down in its country of origin. In the very country where hundreds of artists came together to create something that could initiate dialogue and open doors for new narratives. (1)

He described the move as detrimental not only to filmmakers, actors and artists, but also to creatives who rely on women, the intelligentsia and those who rely on platforms such as streaming sites for financial gain.

Artistic freedom squashed because it is wrongly perceived by some as a moral threat. Predictable, and yet, still disappointing. For this is not just my loss. This is a loss for women and marginalised communities that this show meant to re-represent. (2)

Asim Abbasi said in his tweets that many artists and actors of this country are creating something new together, however their hard work is being wasted, artists in the country are also threatened because of their work and they Ethics is taught.

This is a loss for all actors, writers, directors and technicians across Pakistan, who were hoping for digital/OTT to be their saviour. And it’s a home-run for all the misogynists who have once again proven that they are the only voice that matters. (3)

Asim Abbasi wrote that the ban on ‘Churails’ in Pakistan is not only harmful for artists and actors but it is also a cause of heartache for women and this process also proves that there is a lot of boredom here. There is rule and their words are valued.

After Asim Abbasi, dozens of fans also expressed anger over the closure of ‘Churails’ in Pakistan and the fans termed the closure of the web series as a restriction on freedom of expression.
